Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A car drove into a massive sinkhole at the intersection of Strawberry Street and West Broad Street in Richmond Thursday afternoon.
The sinkhole was caused by a water main break, according to city officials.
“A six-inch cast iron water main in the 2200 block of West Broad Street in the City of Richmond has broken, giving way to a sinkhole,” the Department of Public Utilities said.
The driver has since been charged with reckless driving after trying to drive through a work zone. Strawberry Street has been shut down until further notice and is considered undrivable due to the sinkhole.
Richmond Police are asking drivers to avoid Strawberry Street near Grace and Broad Street while repairs are ongoing.
