Charlottesville, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Charlottesville's City Council has voted to give their Robert E. Lee Statue to an organization that has plans to melt it. The statue played a prominent role in 2017 in Charlottesville, when efforts to remove it lead in part to a KKK rally and the deadly Unite the Right event. The Jefferson School African American Heritage Center has plans to melt it and turn it into new art to give back to the city.
The center's offer was the only local one for the statue. The fates of the other removed statues in Charlottesville will be decided later this month.
The decision comes as the Northam Administration is working to remove the Lee Pedestal in Richmond by the end of the month.
