Midlothian, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Following a week of long lines, late buses, and parent frustration, Chesterfield County officials, and school officials, have announced they are raising bus driver salaries three dollars an hour. The goal is to fill what was a 100 driver shortage. The money will also be used to increase the bonuses being offered to drivers as well.

When asked why the district did not act earlier, Superintendent Merv Daugherty said he "does not have a crystal ball." However, he adds they have been hiring every month. He anticipates it will still take several months to get the district transportation system to the level needed.

Chesterfield has been the focal point of the local bus driver shortage because they began the school year two weeks earlier than everyone else.
