Chesterfield, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Chesterfield County has been awarded a broadband grant of $755,523. The funds will be used to bring internet to underserved areas of the county.

The grant was awarded through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s Virginia Telecommunication initiative (VATI). County officials say the funds will benefit nearly 500 homes. The largest number of potential new connections is in the Matoaca area.

The effort is expected to take between two-to- three years. There will be public outreach along the way.

“Chesterfield is excited about this great news and about the opportunity to work with our partners to implement this grant,” said deputy county administrator Clay Bowles in a press release. “It will provide these citizens with what is nowadays a critical piece of infrastructure.”
