Chesterfield, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Chesterfield County Public Schools says it has 40 bus driver openings, one month before school starts for much of the district. However, Spokesman Shawn Smith says they also have right around that number in training.
Last year, the district was over 100 drivers short, a number it did not make up until the spring. The situation was bad enough that Superintendent Merv Daugherty asked parents to drive their kids to school, leading to backups. Eventually, the district and county had to raise pay and bonuses.
School began for the district's two year-around schools on Monday.
