Chesterfield County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Starting in 2025, more Chesterfield County residents will be able to qualify for the county’s real estate tax relief program.

In a meeting held Tuesday, May 15, the County’s Board of Supervisors approved amendments to the county code regarding the program.

Residents aged 65 and over, as well as those who are permanently and fully disabled, are able to apply for this program.

Approval is based on several requirements, set at the county level by the Board of Supervisors, typically done in a way that aligns with the annual percentage adjustment of the Social Security and Supplementary Income Cost of Living Adjustment (SSI COLA).

Changes were made to these requirements Tuesday night that should expand access to this program. The income requirements and the total acreage limit a person can own have been changed, and the previous cap on total real estate tax relief – which was set at $3,000 – is being removed.

These changes will take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
