Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) will have a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration this weekend, where guests can immerse themselves in Chinese culture and traditions.

ChinaFest: Year of the Wood Snake at the VMFA will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the museum, located at 200 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd.

The event will feature performances and demonstrations, as well as hands-on art activities including calligraphy, paper cutting, and sculpting. There will also be panel discussions about China and students sharing stories about their lives in China.

The VMFA's yearly ChinaFest celebration began 20 years ago. Museum officials say it was created to celebrate the diversity of cultures and highlight the shared elements between the United States and China.

“It was founded by Rose Chen — who we’re honoring this year as part of the festival — as a way to celebrate the culture of China and demonstrate that every culture has shared elements to it,” said Celeste Fetta, the John P. Brock Director of Education and Assistant Deputy Director for Art and Education. “So, just to increase that cross-cultural understanding, and that’s something that we celebrate every day here at the museum and with our collection as well.”

Saturday’s celebration is free to attend. More information can be found on the VMFA’s website.
