Colonial Heights, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Colonial Heights Police have arrested a Charles City County man, accusing him of both being drunk in public and firing a gun into the air. Police say the arrest occurred as they were working their fireworks celebration along Southpark Boulevard.

Officers say witnesses stopped them as they were working the celebration, and told of the gunfire. When they went to a nearby parking lot, officers say they found Garryl Crawley, 59, intoxicated. They also say he was with three young children, all three years old or younger.

Crawley faces a number of charges, including child endangerment, discharging a weapon in public, and being drunk in public. The arrest came ten years to the day Brendon Mackey was killed by celebratory gunfire while walking to Brandermill's fireworks in 2013. Crawley was not charged with celebratory gunfire violations because someone needs to be injured for that law to be used.
