Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- Leaders of the Richmond Community Mediators met on Wednesday to discuss the program and its future in Richmond.

Formerly known as the violence interrupters, the community mediators are a team of three highly trained individuals who will spend their time in Richmond's major Section 8 public housing -- Gilpin, Moseby, Creighton, Fairfield, and Blackwell. These mediators, as well as the program's leader Dr. Gwendolyn Andrews, will work to be close to the community, speak to community members, and meet needs to address poverty and prevent gun violence.

Dr. Andrews cited the community mediators' response to the Altria theater shooting in early June as an example of the program's effectiveness.
