Charlottesville, Va. (NewsradioWRVA.com) - The University of Virginia student accused of killing three UVA football players and wounding two other students was in court Thursday morning for a status hearing.

Chris Jones was in court, under heavy guard, and did not speak much except to converse with his attorney, who is public defender Liz Murtaugh. Jones says he was going to hire an attorney during his initial court appearance to be arraigned, but that did not happen.

The judge in the case scheduled a preliminary hearing in the case for March 30. Commonwealth's Attorney James Hingeley told the judge that the state plans to call a large number of witnesses.

Jones is accused of opening fire on a charter bus as he and other students returned from a field trip to Washington D.C. on November 13. Football players Lavel Davis Jr., D'Sean Perry and Devin Chandler were killed. A fourth member of the team, Mike Hollins, and another student were wounded.
