Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Virginia DMV says traffic deaths hit a 14-year high in 2021, with 968 people dying on Virginia roadways. The number is the highest since 2007, when over 1,000 people died in traffic crashes. The number is also a 14% increase over 2020.

It also comes as AAA Mid-Atlantic says their new survey shows 60% of Virginians plan to travel this summer. Forty percent are planning multiple trips. The survey was done last week, so high gas prices were taken into account. AAA believes there is pent up demand after two pandemic years.

To lower the fatality numbers, the DMV is asking drivers to buckle up, slow down, pay attention, and drive sober. Speeds have increased on the roads during the pandemic, as there were fewer cars to slow people down.
