Charlottesville, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins, an outspoken supporter of gun rights, and who is currently running for re-election, has been indicted by the Department of Justice for allegedly taking bribes. The newly unsealed indictment says Jenkins accepted bribes in the form of both cash and campaign contributions, in return for making the payors auxiliary deputies. He also allegedly gave them credentials, which Jenkins said allowed the carriers to conceal carry across the country without getting a permit.
The Department of Justice says among those allegedly paying the bribes to Jenkins were two undercover FBI agents. Jenkins also allegedly helped one person get his gun rights back in exchange for a bribe.
Jenkins was a vocal opponent of Democratic efforts to tighten Virginia gun laws during the 2020 and 2021 sessions, in which Democrats held control. He even vowed to make Culpeper residents auxiliary deputies to "protect" gun rights.
If convicted, Jenkins could face decades in prison. He is running for re-election this fall.
