Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Danny Avula is set to be Richmond’s next mayor after having secured enough districts to avoid a runoff election against runner-up Michelle Mosby.
Avula captured about 46% of the total votes. He led in six of the city's nine districts – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th – with all precincts reporting.
Dr. Avula, 46, is a pediatrician at Chippenham Hospital. He was formerly director of the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts and led Virginia’s COVID-19 vaccination effort in 2021.
Michelle Mosby finished in second place with about 25% of the total votes; Harrison Roday was third (13%); Andreas Addison was fourth (12%); and Maurice Neblett was fifth (3%).
"It’s going to take all of us, but together we will build a Richmond where everyone’s rights are protected, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, and where no one gets left behind," Dr. Avula wrote in a social media post. "Thank you, and let’s get to work."
