Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - As Hurricane Ian draws closer to making landfall in Florida, households all the way up the East Coast are preparing to weather the storm. Even though the hurricane will be considerably weaker by the time it hits Virginia, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management is urging people to be prepared.

The most important step one can take, according to VDEM, is to assemble an Emergency Kit. Such a kit could include bottled water, batteries, and shelf-stable food, but also personal medications and important documents. VDEM also advises that everyone establish a communication plan with out-of-town family or loved ones in the event of a major power outage. Heading into this weekend, they say the most important thing is to stay informed as the storm progresses and the situation develops.

As of this article's publication, the Richmond area isn't expected to see much of Hurricane Ian besides a few inches of tropical rainfall. VDEM, however, advises that basic preparation efforts now can be helpful even months or years down the line.
