Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - As of Wednesday, Dominion Energy is no longer using sirens as their warning systems around the North Anna and Surry Nuclear Power Plants. Instead, Dominion is now using what is known as IPAWS, which uses text and phone messages, as well as the Emergency Alert System.

Dominion Spokesman Scott Miller says the new system is better because it allows them to provide information, instead of just warning people to look for information. He compares the system to what is currently done to provide weather and Amber alerts.

Dominion previously used sirens to warn of emergencies around the two nuclear power plants and would test them quarterly.
