Blacksburg, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - It is not your imagination, we have had a slower start to the Hurricane Season. While there are currently two named storms in the Atlantic Ocean, they are only the fourth and fifth of the season.
Virginia Tech Geography Professor and Hurricane Expert Stephanie Zick says the water is warm enough for storms, and wind shear has not been a major factor. What has been impacting storms is dry air in the formation zone stunting development. However, Zick says recent "waves" have made the air more moist and favorable to storms.
Zick also points out that even below average years can be bad, for example, the infamous Hurricane Andrew caused major damage in South Florida in a down year.
