Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - It's race weekend in Richmond. The April 1-3 races are the earliest NASCAR races to be held in Richmond since 1997. The main event, the Toyota Owners 400, will take place Sunday afternoon.
Richmond Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier says NASCAR chose to change up the schedule this year, so that the Richmond race is not near the end of April, but at the beginning. He says there doesn't appear to be an impact on ticket sales, despite the colder weather. Bickmeier believes fans are eager to attend an April race, after the 2020 race was postponed, and the 2021 was limited capacity because of Covid. He also says the race is followed by short-track races in Martinsville and Bristol, which could allow fans to travel to all three easily.
This is Bickmeier's last race at the Raceway. He was just named the first Executive Director of the Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority. He starts with the county April 18th.
