Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Wednesday’s early voting for the primary presidential elections will no longer occur in Richmond after the city’s Office of Elections announced that its building’s heating system failed.

In a video posted to X at around 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, Richmond General Registrar Keith Balmer said this malfunction in the building caused the “release of fumes and smoke.”

Richmond Fire and Emergency Services arrived swiftly to prevent further damage, but officials have decided to halt early voting as a precaution.

“In the interest of ensuring the safety and well-being of our dedicated staff, poll workers and valued voters, I have made the decision to suspend early voting for today. The potential risk of smoke inhalation necessitates this precautionary measure,” Balmer said.

Richmond Office of Elections is located at 2134 West Laburnum Avenue. At this time, there is no word on when the building will be reopened for early voting.
