Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A bill that would have allowed local police departments, with restrictions, to use facial recognition technology went down to defeat in the House of Delegates Thursday. The opposition united some Republicans and Democrats.
Delegate Cia Price (D-Newport News) raised over-policing and racial concerns, saying the technology is more likely to be used and have problems in minority communities. Delegate Nick Freitas (R-Culpeper), meanwhile, said he was worried about big government.
The measure had passed the Democratically-controlled State Senate.
