Dinwiddie, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The family of Irvo Otieno, along with lawyers, gave an emotional, hour-long press conference Thursday afternoon, after witnessing video surrounding his death at Central State Hospital. The press conference came at the same time three hospital employees were charged with second degree murder in his death, joining seven Henrico Sheriff's deputies.
Otieno's mother, Caroline Ouko, says her son "was treated worse than a dog." She says Irvo Otieno was suffering from a mental health crisis. She says those involved "smothered" her son.
Dinwiddie Commonwealth's Attorney Ann Baskervill this afternoon announced three additional murder charges in the case, citing, in part, video evidence from Central State Hospital. Charged were: Darian M. Blackwell, 23, of Petersburg, Va., Wavie L. Jones, 34, of Chesterfield, Va., and Sadarius D. Williams, 27, of North Dinwiddie, Va.
The case will go in front of the grand jury next week.
