Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A Senate sub-committee Wednesday morning killed a bill opponents said would have lead to the "forced outing" of transgender kids. The bill would have required most school officials to inform parents if their child identified as transgender.

Delegate Dave Larock (R-Loudoun) argued it was better for the child and the situation if parents were informed and involved. However, opponents pointed out that not all parents are supportive of their child being transgender.

The bill had two days of emotional debate before passing the house. Delegate Dawn Adams (D-Richmond) talked about multiple suicide attempts tied to the difficulties she had coming out as lesbian. Transgender issues have received a heavy focus this General Assembly session.
