Chesterfield County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Former Chesterfield County Superintendent Billy K. Cannaday Jr. has passed away, according to a statement from the school division.

Cannaday served as Chesterfield's superintendent of schools from 2000-2006 after serving for six years as superintendent of Hampton Public Schools.


Cannaday was appointed to a four-year term as Virginia superintendent of public instruction by Governor Timothy M. Kaine in 2006. He subsequently served as president of the state Board of Education under Governor Terry McAuliffe.

The Virginia Association of School Superintendents named Cannaday Virginia Superintendent of the Year in 2005. Cannaday was principal of Huntington Middle School in Newport News when the school was awarded a Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in 1984 by the U.S. Department of Education.
