Caroline, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Fort AP Hill will get a new name next week. The military has scheduled a re-designation ceremony for August 25th to name the base Fort Walker. The military is in the process of renaming bases that honored Confederate leaders.
Fort Walker honors Doctor Mary Walker, who treated Union soldiers in field hospitals during the Civil War. Walker also received the Medal of Honor from President Andrew Johnson, despite being a civilian.
Recently, Fort Lee became Fort Gregg-Adams, and Fort Pickett became Fort Barfoot.
