New Kent, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - UPDATE: Virginia State Police now say the four killed in the crash were from Kentucky. It is believed a medical condition may have contributed to the car driving on the shoulder.

Virginia State Police say four people, inlcuding three kids, were killed late Monday morning when a car, passing other vehicles on the shoulder, went off the road and struck a pole holding a VDOT camera. State Police say the car then caught fire.

It is not clear why the car was driving on the shoulder. State Police say there was no construction in the area, nor were there any lane closures. State Police also say the accident "rendered the camera inoperable."

There was a fifth passenger in the car that was taken to the hospital. That passenger has life-threatening injuries. The accident caused huge backups along I-64 West in New Kent.
