Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com)- Richmond kicked off this year's Living Donor Day by celebrating the new chance at life and extended family that two Richmonders received last year.

Evon Walker and Hughton Maye both received life saving kidney transpalnts from the other's sister, and now, they say they're one big family.

After facing long battles with minimal change disease and diabetes, both Evon and Hughton had become desperate for a new kidney, and with their donors being alive, the kidneys should last even longer.

Hughton said that he is now able to do things he was afraid to do a year ago, and he owes it all to his sisters, Carol, Evon and Sophia. Although Sophia is his only biological sisters, he gained two more in July 2021.

At first, Sophia and Carol had volunteered to donate to help their own siblings. But after finding out that wasn't possible the doctors informed them that they could do a kidney swap with another family in need.

Evon said that as a DMV employee, she promotes donating organs everyday, but now she can say it has saved her life. All four of them say this is a holiday they'll celebrate forever.
