Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A number of gun-control bills made it through the Senate Judiciary Committee Monday, the first step in a long trek to potential passage. Many of the bills will face another committee (Finance) before heading to the Senate floor.

Among the bills approved were a bill that makes it a misdemeanor to not lock your gun and ammunition when there are children present. The bill comes just over two weeks after a six year old shot a teacher at a Newport News elementary school. The six year old used his family's legally bought weapon.

The committee also approved an assault weapons ban. Both gun bills are unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled House of Delegates.
