Hanover, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - With an elected school board in Hanover County now on the ballot, those behind the effort say they will now be running a "grassroots" campaign for an elected school board. Early voting begins in September. Hanover Citizens for an Elected School Board just recently announced they had collected enough signatures to get the issue in front of the voters.
The group's Susie Gallagher says they do not have money to run a big campaign. Gallagher also says ads do not make sense as many of them will go outside of the target audience, which is Hanover residents. The organization is planning to talk to people at events to let them know the issue.
Hanover is one of only 11 localities in Virginia that does not elect it's school board. Not everyone is in support of a change, as the Hanover GOP believes an elected school board will be beholden to interest groups, and they suggest efforts for it are coming from Democrats.
