Henrico County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Henrico County Police Division has announced a new system to better prioritize calls.
Chief Eric English said officers have routinely responded to calls for service where they have no legal authority. This has, at times, prevented them from responding to other priority calls in a timely and efficient manner.
“In the past, our patrol officers have routinely been put in positions, or responded to calls for service, where they have no legal authority,” said Henrico Police Chief Eric D. English in a YouTube video announcing the changes.
Under a new system, the Henrico Police Department will no longer respond to certain calls, including calls about animals, marijuana use, shoplifting, panhandling, noise complaints, and others.
English says the changes could decrease call volume by nearly 5,000, but he also stressed that emergency services will still be provided.
“We assure you that we are still here supporting the community every day,” he said.
