Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Republican-controlled House of Delegates voted Thursday to restrict localities from having their own gun control laws. This would reverse a move made during Democratic control to allow localities to chose their own gun control laws if they wish.
Delegate Tim Anderson (R-Virginia Beach), a gun shop owner, argued that gun laws should be uniform across the Commonwealth, otherwise, owners risk becoming criminals from town to town. He also said there are not enough law enforcement to protect everyone if you disarm people.
Democratic delegates argued the law didn't require localities to pass gun control laws, but rather, allowed them to do so if they wished. Delegate Sally Hudson (D-Charlottesville) says white supremacists continue to return to Charlottesville armed until the city was allowed to ban guns in certain locations. The bill now heads to the Democratically controlled Senate, where it is not likely to be approved.
