Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Republican-controlled House of Delegates Thursday passed a number of election changes, all of which have little chance of passing the Democratically-controlled State Senate. Among the changes: an Election Day deadline for absentee ballots.
Democrats argued such a change would disenfranchise military ballots that get delayed in the mail. However, Republicans argued that elections need to have certainty. Current law allows absentee ballots to be received until the Friday after Election Day, provided they are postmarked by Election Day.
Other changes approved by Delegates included a re-instatement of the photo ID requirement, and cutting down in-person absentee voting to two weeks before Election Day.
