Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A House of Delegates subcommittee this morning approved multiple bills that would have tightened Virginia's current voting set-up. The bills approved would eliminate drop boxes, and limit early voting to just two weeks prior to an election.
Currently dropboxes are legal, and early voting lasts 45 days. Delegate John McGuire (R-Henrico) argued that the dropboxes are no longer needed as, in his view, the Covid-19 pandemic is over. However, opponents say it would make it more difficult for the elderly and disabled to vote. Republicans pushing to limit early voting argued it's a cost issue for localities, while supporters said access is good.
Neither effort is expected to make it through the Democratically-controlled Senate.
