Windsor, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - In a vote last week, the Isle of Wight School Board voted to ban the teaching of systemic racism. The vote split along racial lines, with white members of the school board in favor, and African-American members opposed. A number of teachers also spoke out against the policy.
The ban was part of an overall policy on teaching controversial topics. Teachers who spoke out in opposition said they do not tell students how to think, rather, they provide information and let students think for themselves.
They also argued that the majority did not bring any evidence that there is not systemic racism in the United States government or in the country.
The teaching of controversial topics has been a constant issue in Virginia school districts since the campaign for Governor in 2021.
