Los Angeles, Ca. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the family of Sharie, Mark, and Brooke Winek are suing Washington County and the Commonwealth of Virginia over the hiring of Austin Edwards. Last November, Edwards, who was at that point a member of the Washington County Sheriff's Department, crossed the country, killed the Wineks, and took off with a teenage girl. Edwards died as law enforcement closed in.
The family alleges, among other things, negligence and breach of mandatory duties. State Police have admitted human errors in the hiring of Edwards lead to mental health issues being missed. The Commonwealth was informed of the intent to sue recently, and Washington County was informed in March.
State Police say they cannot comment on pending legislation.
