Fairfax, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Virginia's largest school district, Fairfax County, says it has determined its "off-ramps" for its mask mandate. The district is one of seven in Virginia (including Richmond) that sued to keep their mandates. The off-ramps come even as the General Assembly appears poised to make masks optional Commonwealth-wide in schools.

Fairfax says it will allow optional mask wearing when community transmission in the county is at a "moderate" level. Moderate, according to the CDC, is fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 people for a week. Fairfax is currently in high transmission, with a case count near 3,000.

Fairfax says unvaccinated and partially vaccinated staff would have to continue to mask, regardless of transmission level. The seven districts that sued to keep their mandates did win a temporary restraining order against Governor Glenn Youngkin (R).
