Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Lawmakers are reacting after the General Assembly's Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission issued a report showing Virginia underfunds education. The report says Virginia provides 14% less funding than the national average, or approximately $1,900 per student.
Democrats used the report to say that any budget deal should not include Governor Glenn Youngkin's (R) proposed tax cuts. The General Assembly has not agreed on any budget amendments, although the Commonwealth is in the middle of a two year spending plan and they do not need to come to an agreement to keep the Commonwealth running.
Governor Youngkin lays the blame on the last two administrations, both Democrats. However, Republicans had at least partial control of the General Assembly for all but two of those years. Youngkin says he did propose additional funding for education along with the tax cuts.
