Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Commonwealth of Virginia has announced the Robert E. Lee Monument, the largest remaining Confederate Monument in the U.S., will be removed Wednesday. Richmond Police announced over the weekend that streets around the Monument were going to be closed Tuesday evening through Saturday. The State Supreme Court cleared the way for removal of the monument last week.
Opportunities to view the removal will be limited. The Commonwealth is recommending most people watch via a livestream on the Governor's facebook and twitter pages, which you can access here and here.
For those wanting to watch in person, there is first-come, first-serve access from the Stuart Circle side of the monument. The map is above this story. The monument will be taken to a state-owned facility until a decision is made on its future. The plaques will be removed after the Statue is taken down.
The Lee Monument was erected in 1890.
