Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- By 9am Wednesday morning, there were no longer any Confederate monuments on Monument Avenue. The Robert E. Lee Statue was taken off of its pedestal rather quickly, compared to the hours it took to remove Stonewall Jackson for its pedestal in July 2020.

People were allowed to watch from the Stuart Circle side of the Monument. Many there were supportive of the decision to take it down, many also saying they could not have imagined this a few years ago. They also said it was but a step on the way to equality.

One activist did get beyond the security perimeter shortly after the statue was taken down and ran with a flag. He was shepparded back to the crowd. Richmond City Councilman Mike Jones says he plans to introduce a resolution asking for control of the property to be given back from State. The Monument has been state jurisdiction, one of the reasons it was not taken down with the others, which were controlled by the City.
