Syria, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The wildfire in Syria, in Madison County, has now spread to 425 acres, according to the State Forestry Department. The fire is not a risk to any homes, and is now 35% contained.
Western Virginia has been dry this year, especially over the last week or so. Forestry Spokesman Cory Swift says the dry conditions, plus leaves, have provided fuel. The incoming cold front has also brought winds, which has not helped firefighting efforts.
However, the cold front will hopefully also bring rain. Swift says they are also fighting a few other wildfires in western Virginia, although the Madison fire is the largest.
