Maintenance Worker Dies in Department Store Accident

RICHMOND, VA — The Richmond Fire Department Technical Rescue Team is working to recover the body of a man killed in an escalator incident this morning.

At approximately 9:52 a.m., crews responded to the Dillard’s store at 9208 Stony Point Parkway for the report of a man who fell down the escalator shaft. Once on scene, they found the victim trapped underneath and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead by medics with the Richmond Ambulance Authority, who then advised this incident was a recovery.

The victim is reportedly a maintenance technician, who was working on the escalator at the time of the incident. Our crews will complete recovery of the body, after confirmation from the Medical Examiner’s Office is received. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The Virginia Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be investigating the circumstances of the incident.
