Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com)- This week, Richmond City's Mayor, Levar Stoney, spent the first half of his weekly update pleading on behalf of hungry children. He encouraged Virginians to lobby their congressmen and women to include waivers for the USDA to continue to provide free and reduced lunch to students who need it.
Mayor Stoney said that although the current waivers are set to expire on June 30th, the challenge of childhood hunger will not. Stoney currently serves as chairman of Mayors Alliance Against Hunger because the issue is both important and personal to him.
As he begged Virginians to advocate for these students, he also reminded them of how the pandemic has already impacted school systems. According to Mayor Stoney, an estimated 92 percent of school districts nationwide are struggling to feed their students due to supply chain issues and employee shortages. Stoney stressed the urgency of the issue by reminding listeners that congress will sign the omnibus spending bill in just a few hours.
