Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney held a ceremony Monday to proclaim the day as "Indigenous People's Day" in Richmond. The day has traditionally been Columbus Day, but Richmond, as well as many places, have changed its focus in recent years, as there has been a greater focus on the negative aspects of Columbus' interactions with the Native Americans.

During the ceremony, Stoney says Richmond has a rich history, but it can only be enriching if it is examined in total: the good, the bad, and the ugly. He says the area's native people should be admired for their resiliency.

Richmond used to have a statue of Christopher Columbus in Byrd Park, but it was taken down by protestors during the 2020 protests.
