Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Co ngresswoman-elect Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond) says it may take a week or so to go the 90 miles from Richmond to the U-S Capitol. McClellan says procedurally, she has to wait until the State Elections Department communicates her win to the House of Representatives. On Wednesday, a day after the election. McClellan continued to serve in her seat in the State Senate.

McClellan compared returning to the Senate on Wednesday as approaching high school graduation. When she gets to Washington, she will be the newest member of Congress, but she says she plans to have a say on the defense bill and on the agriculture bill. McClellan also plans to focus on constituent services.


McClellan becomes the first African-American woman elected to Congress from Virginia. She succeeds the late Congressman Donald McEachin, who died shortly after winning re-election in November.
