Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Starting Monday, Jan. 8, metal detector installation will begin at all seven Richmond city public middle schools.

The decision to add metal detectors came during a school board meeting last month. School leaders said at the time that a survey showed support for metal detectors among students, families, and staff.

Nearly 46% of those surveyed agreed that weapons were an issue in schools. Fifty-four percent of survey respondents strongly agreed that metal detectors could reduce the chance of weapons entering the school.

Now, the seven schools in the district will be getting over 40 screening tools. Some schools will receive as many as four detection units. Middle school students will be screened by the tools as they arrive at school each day.

The installation process is expected to last a week.

The seven affected schools include; Albert Hill, Dogwood, Lucille M. Brown, Martin Luther King, Jr., River City, Thomas C. Boushall, and Thomas H. Henderson.
