Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Attorney General-elect Jason Miyares (R) says he wants the General Assembly to pass legislation that would allow him to get more involved in local prosecutions. Miyares wants legal power to take over cases if the Chief of Police or Sheriff of a locality request it, believing the Commonwealth's Attorney isn't doing the job.
Miyares mentioned specifically what he sees as "social justice" Commonwealth's Attorneys, primarily in Northern Virginia (although there was a similar conflict in Chesterfield a few years ago). It's unclear the General Assembly would pass such a bill, as the State Senate is still controlled by Democrats.
Miyares also says he plans to investigate Loudoun County Schools for their handling of a recent rape case involving two students. Originally portrayed as an attack on a female student, it came out in court the incident was actually a case of date rape. The student accused was moved to another school following the accusation, and now stands accused in a separate attack at that school as well.
Miyares enters office January 15th.
