Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Virginia Department of Health says eligibility for the monkeypox vaccine has increased. Monkeypox is a virus that causes a rash, and potentially fever, chills, and exhaustion. The world is in the midst of a monkeypox outbreak right now.

Under the new guidelines, people of any sexual orientation who have HIV/AIDS, or within the last three months had a sexually transmitted disease, are eligible for the vaccine. VDH's Dr. Laurie Forlano says those groups were disproportionately represented in monkeypox cases, and there is enough vaccine to allow for expansion.

Forlano does say the rate of increase in cases appears to be slowing. Virginia has currently had over 450 cases in this recent outbreak.
