Henrico County, VA. (NewsradioWRVA.com) - Henrico County is getting ready to send a report to VDOT next month that will include plans for a new interchange at Interstate 64 and Gayton Road as well as make improvements to the Westbound 64 interchange at West Broad Street in the Short Pump area.

Before any of that happens, Henrico invited Congressman Rob Wittman, whose district now incudes Short Pump, and Federal Highway Administration Division Administrator Thomas Nelson to go on a ride-along from the Henrico Government Center through the Short Pump area to see the need first-hand.

Before that ride along even happened, Henrico Assistant Police Chief Mike Palkovics said that a stretch of Broad between Sadler Road and the Goochland County line had six of top ten accident spots in the entire county. Three Chopt Supervisor Tommy Branin says that it's a safety issue for the entire Richmond area--and for the people from out of the area who come to Short Pump to shop.

Congressman Wittman says that the ride-along was important because often during approval processes for road projects, many back-and-forth questions happen to try to get a better feel of the issues. He says he hopes the entire project will be approved by late next year. The report goes to VDOT next month and then to the Federal Highway Administration after the new year.
