Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - With his term nearing an end, Governor Ralph Northam held a sit-down interview with the New York Times to discuss his blackface scandal from 2019. In the interview, Northam continues to maintain he does not believe he is either person in the photo on his yearbook page at Eastern Virginia Medical School. The photo features a man in blackface and another wearing a KKK hood.

Northam does say, however, that the experience opened his eyes, and that many of the racial justice policies he is touting now would not have occurred without the incident. He says it helped him to understand when people talk about Black oppression.

The Governor also talked about current racial politics, saying talk about critical race theory is just a "dog whistle." He says what he is worried about is "equity." He also says one of his proudest moments was signing the bill ending the death penalty, calling it Black oppression in a different form.
