Chesterfield County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Cosby High School in Chesterfield County closed Thursday, March 21 due to a bomb threat made by a student in an online group chat.

In an announcement shared with parents, the school principal said the decision to close to the school was made “out of an abundance of caution.

The principal said school leaders were notified late Wednesday night that eight students were in a group chat and one person said they were going to blow up Cosby High School on Thursday.

School leaders then contacted the Chesterfield County Police Department to investigate the matter.

Chesterfield Police officers and other law enforcement officials went to the home of the student who made the threat to investigate. Officials also brought in K-9 units to sweep the building and gave the all clear.

“Investigators located and interviewed the suspect student, who reported that the threatening statement was a joke,” CCPD said in a statement. “The investigation indicates the suspect did not have the means to carry out the threat and the threat was not credible.”

The principal said that in addition to the closing, the SAT school day is being postponed. The announcement added that families and staff will receive an update at 4 p.m. or earlier on Thursday with plans for Friday.
