Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - UPDATE: VCU announced Thursday it was pulling the partnership and stopping production over the concerns of the community.
A VCU Chemistry professor is raising opposition to a VCU-branded beer the university is unveiling with Hardywood Brewery. Dr. Everett Carpenter says faculty and students voted against changing the policy, which prohibited such branding, but the university went along with it anyway.
Carpenter says it is in poor taste, following last year's death of Adam Oakes, a freshman who died of alcohol poisoning during a fraternity initiation. He also says it raises issues of shared governance, given the vote against the policy change. VCU says the money raised by the branding will fund scholarships, and it is not branded to students.
The unveiling will take place Wednesday.
