Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Virginia pedestrian deaths are up 34% from last year according to the VA Department of Motor Vehicles. 123 pedestrians have killed in Virginia so far in 2022, 7 of whom were in Richmond. This statistic ties Richmond with Henrico County and Prince William County for the third most pedestrian deaths in the state.
John Saunders, Director of the DMV Highway Safety Office, says that pedestrians and drivers share the burden of keeping people safe. Pedestrians should be alert, he says, and only cross at intersections. Drivers, on the other hand, should be especially alert after dark and make sure to watch their speed. Excessive speed, according to Saunders, contributes to between 44% and 48% of pedestrian casualties on the road.
Infrastructural improvements can also be made to help keep those on foot safe, says Saunders. Crosswalks, lighting, and more sidewalks can all help make the city more walkable and safer for pedestrians.
